Every student has heard the usual advice: make a timetable, avoid distractions, revise regularly. It's not wrong, but it's also not specific enough to actually change how someone studies. 1. Study in short, focused blocks

Two hours of half-attentive reading is worth less than 45 minutes of full concentration. Try 25-40 minute blocks with a short break in between. Your attention span will thank you, and so will your retention.

2. Test yourself instead of re-reading

Re-reading notes feels productive but is one of the weakest ways to learn. Active recall — closing the book and trying to write down what you remember — forces your brain to actually retrieve the information, which is what sticks.

3. Space it out

Cramming the night before works for recognition, not recall. Reviewing a topic a day later, then a week later, then a month later builds much stronger long-term memory than one long session.

4. Teach it to someone else

If you can explain a concept simply to a sibling or a friend, you understand it. If you can't, you've just found the gap in your preparation before your exam does.

5. Do past papers under real time pressure

Knowing the content and being able to answer it in exam conditions are two different skills. Past papers, done with a timer, train both.

6. Keep one running mistake list

9. Set a specific goal for each session

"Study chemistry" is vague. "Finish 20 MCQs on chemical bonding and review the ones I get wrong" is a session you can actually complete and measure.

10. Ask for help earlier than feels necessary

A concept that's unclear in week one becomes a much bigger problem by week ten. Whether it's a teacher, a tutor, or a classmate, asking early is almost always the cheaper option — in time and in stress.

None of these habits require special resources. They just require consistency, and consistency is what actually separates students who feel prepared from students who feel like they're guessing on exam day.
