Most resumes don't get rejected because the candidate is unqualified. They get rejected in the first ten seconds because the reader — human or software — can't find the information they're looking for. If you've applied to a dozen jobs or internships and heard nothing back, the problem is very often the document itself, not you.

Your resume is read by a filter before it's read by a person

Most mid-size and large employers in Pakistan now run applications through an Applicant Tracking System before a human ever opens them, especially for roles posted on job boards. These systems scan for keywords from the job description — specific skills, tools, and job titles — and rank or filter candidates accordingly. A resume built as a designed image, a scanned PDF, or a text box inside a fancy template often can't be read by these systems at all. The safest format is a simple, text-based PDF with standard section headings: Experience, Education, Skills. It won't win a design award, but it will actually get opened.

Lead with what you did, not what you were responsible for

"Responsible for managing social media accounts" tells a recruiter nothing about whether you were good at it. "Grew Instagram following from 800 to 6,200 in four months through a weekly content calendar" tells them everything in one line. Every bullet point under a job or project should follow the same shape: what you did, how, and what happened as a result. If you don't have a number, use a concrete outcome instead — "reduced customer complaints" is weaker than "reduced customer complaints by 30%," but still far stronger than "handled customer complaints."

This matters even more for students and fresh graduates with limited work history. A final-year project, a university society role, or a freelance gig all count as experience if you describe the actual outcome rather than just the title.

Cut the sections that quietly hurt you

A few habits are extremely common on resumes from Pakistan and consistently work against the candidate: a large photo that invites unconscious bias, personal details like religion, marital status, or father's name that no employer legitimately needs, and an "Objective" paragraph that says nothing a hiring manager couldn't guess ("Seeking a challenging position where I can utilize my skills"). None of this helps you get shortlisted. Replace the objective with a two-line summary that states your actual specialization and one measurable achievement — that's the only "objective" a recruiter reads.

Tailor it, every single time

Sending the same resume to every job is the single biggest reason strong candidates get filtered out. Before you apply, read the job posting and note the three or four skills or tools it repeats. If your resume already reflects those in your own words, keep it. If it doesn't, and you genuinely have that experience, rewrite the relevant bullet points to say so directly. This isn't dishonest — it's translating your real experience into the language the employer is already using to search for someone.

Keep it to one page unless you have a real reason not to

For students, fresh graduates, and anyone with under seven or eight years of experience, one page is the right length. A second page should only exist because you have too much directly relevant experience to fit on one — not because the font is large or the margins are wide. Recruiters spend seconds per resume in the first pass; a tightly written one page beats a padded two-page one almost every time.
